Here's what to expect before, during and after a Reclast treatment.
Before your treatment:
Your healthcare provider may order a simple blood test to check your blood calcium and kidney functionto make sure that Reclast is right for you. |
Reclast is given by a nurse or doctor and the treatment takes at least 15 minutes. You may receive your infusion at your healthcare provider's office or they may refer you to a specialist or an infusion center for treatment. |
If you are being referred, make sure that your healthcare provider has sent your relevant medical records (blood test results, for example) or that you take them with you. |
What to expect on treatment day:
You should eat normally before your treatment. It's recommended that you drink 2 glasses of fluids, such as water, within a few hours before receiving Reclast, to help prevent kidney problems. |
Reclast is given by inserting a small needle into a vein. During your Reclast treatment, you can relax, read a book, flip through a magazine or listen to music. |
What to expect after treatment:
After you've received Reclast, you can resume your normal activities. |
Take daily calcium and vitamin D as recommended by your doctor to help maintain blood calcium levels. |
The most common side effects include flu-like illness, fever, muscle or joint pain and headache. Most occur in the days following treatment. A mild pain reliever such as acetaminophen may reduce these symptoms. After the second treatment, these side effects were much less common. |
Remember, once-yearly Reclast, along with daily calcium and vitamin D, helps strengthen your bones and protect them from fracture for an entire year.
