Living with Osteoporosis

If you have osteoporosis, you may be concerned about falling or fracturing a bone. Maybe you notice yourself holding onto handrails when you walk down stairs more often than you used to. But there are definitely things you can do to reduce your risk of fracture.

Your doctor may prescribe treatment. If so, you might be interested in knowing that Reclast is the only FDA-approved, once-a-year treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Treatment is given by a nurse or doctor and takes at least 15 minutes. With Reclast, you won't have to wait to eat or remain upright for a half-hour or more.

One annual dose, along with daily calcium and vitamin D, helps strengthen your bones and protect them from fracture for 12 months.

No other treatment is approved to help protect from fractures in more places, including hip, spine, even other bones.

Because it's an IV, Reclast bypasses your digestive system, going to work to make your bones stronger for 12 full months.

How diet and exercise can help protect your bone health

A healthy lifestyle is important for healthy bones. That includes eating a well-balanced diet rich in calcium. Calcium helps keep your bones strong, and vitamin D helps your body absorb the calcium.

Exercise helps bone strength and balance

Physical activity plays an important role in maintaining healthier bones. It's been shown to increase bone strength and improve balance. If you don't exercise, it's never too late to start. Even a little exercise can go a long way in improving the strength of your bones. Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

Preventing falls

If you have osteoporosis, a fall could affect your life. So take some precautions that can help to prevent a fall, such as fall-proofing your home, seeing your eye and ear doctors regularly, and watching out for medications that make you dizzy.
