If you have trouble getting enough calcium from foods you eat, you may need to supplement your diet. (Many Americans do. Calcium supplements are among the top-selling supplements.) Calcium supplements, when given with vitamin D, are better absorbed than calcium supplements alone. Calcium is also more easily absorbed if you take supplements in divided doses (23 times a day, for example).
If you are being treated with a prescription osteoporosis medicine (such as Reclast), it's especially important to take daily calcium and vitamin D as recommended by your doctor to help maintain blood calcium levels.
And if you're looking for a few good calcium-rich foods, then don't just think dairy products (which are your best source of calcium). Spinach is a good source of calcium, as are some other dark green veggies, like broccoli and turnip and beet greens.
